Location

The City Archives are located on Tolli Street, on the northern edge of the Old Town near St. Olaf’s Church (see the Tallinn digital map at /eng/kaart).

The archives can be reached from Pikk or Lai Streets in the Old Town, or by tram 1 or 2 from Viru square or the Baltic Railway Station (“Linnahall” stop). The closest parking lot (fee-charging) is located between Rannamäe Road and Uus Street.

The City Archives are housed in three buildings – Tolli 4, 6 and 8. The largest of these is the former Customs and Packing House (designed by the architect J. C. Moor) in Early Classicist style at Tolli 8. The city residence of Peter the Great once occupied the same location. Tolli 6 was initially a private residence, thought to have been constructed at the end of the 14th century. Number 4 consists of two buildings built in the first half of the 15th century, but probably reworked as a common residence in the second half of the 18th century. As architectural landmarks, Tolli 4 and Tolli 6 are under heritage protection.
