Viruvärava (Viru Gate) Hill’s Park, i.e. Musumäe (Kissing Hill) Park

Virumägi (Viru Hill), i.e. Viruvärava (Viru Gate) Hill, i.e. Musumägi (Kissing Hill) is located on the remains of the partially built up Bremeni Bastion designed in 1686. The major refurbishing works were undertaken on Viru Hill in 1897, when a park with winding paths and rich in species was laid down in accordance with the design of a famous landscape gardener of Riga Georg Kuphald under the guidance of Tallinn city gardener Hugo Walcker. The park was decorated with a pavilion designed by the architect Nikolai Thamm senior. The pavilion is well‑preserved and can be seen nowadays as well. The triangular sphere with a fountain bordering the Viru Square was shaped already during the Russian Tsar times. The present design containing the box‑tree hedges and the rose‑bed originates from 1945. Though, many rare and demanding trees and bushes vanished due to the severe winters, vandalism and changed light conditions. There were ca 40 species of ligneous plants together with different sorts of lilac growing in Viruvärava Park in autumn 2007.
