Beginning of school by a child below the age for compulsory school attendance
Parents of children 6 years old wishing to enrol their children in school should make sure to notify the Tallinn Education Department of this before 1 May.
If this has not been done, a 6-year-old child may enrol at a school if there are free spots available after 23 June.
Admission to a school of a child below the age for compulsory school attendance is regulated by subsection 7 (5) of the Basic Schools and Upper Secondary Schools Act.
In addition to an application, a legal representative of a child below the age for compulsory school attendance shall submit to the Education Department either an assessment by a kindergarten or a recommendation of an advisory panel as to the readiness of the child for school:
- for a child attending kindergarten, an assessment should obtained by applying to the kindergarten attended by the child;
- for a child staying at home, the Tallinn children's advisory panel should be applied to.
The following shall be submitted to the Tallinn children's advisory panel:
- application;
- copy of the child's identity document;
- copy of the child's identity document;
- opinion and recommendation by the teaching staff of a preparatory class (for a child attending a preparatory class);
- family physician's assessment of the child's overall state of health;
- assessment of another specialist if needed.
