How to buy ticket


  • A ticket purchased from driver (at the price of 1,6 €) will grant you the right for one ride. You must only use cash to buy a ticket from the driver of public transport vehicle. You must enter the public transport vehicle, using the front door, to purchase one end ticket. A passenger will be required to keep the one-end ticket until the end of the ride. One end ticket is not marked, punched or validated.

 

Passengers that are not residents of Tallinn entitled the right of discounted travel

(university students, pensioners, passengers aged 16 and over with severe or profound disabilities, and passengers who are parents of 3 or more children)

  • Purchase a Public Transport Card for the price of 2 €. The cards can be purchased in various points of sale.
  • In order to get a discount, personalise your card, it can be done for 1 € at a point of sale or for free at www.pilet.ee/yhiskaart. If your data were listed in the Estonian Education Information System and Estonian National Social Insurance Board Information System databases, the data would be automatically loaded onto the card. In case the document that certify the right to discounted travel is only on paper, the salesman should be asked to issue a discounted card at a point of sale when personalising it or, on Internet, tick a form in the box: "olen sooduspiletiga sõitja ja tõendan sõidusoodustuse saamise õigust soodustust tõendava dokumendiga" (“I am entitled the right to free travel and certify the right to free travel with a relevant document”).
  • Load money onto the Public Transport Card or buy an e-ticket. It can be done at a point of sale, with a mobile, or on Internet.
  • Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.

 

Free public transport

As of 2013, all residents of Tallinn, school students and passengers aged 65 years and over (registered  resident of Estoniaare entitled the right of free travel byTallinn public transport. In order to travel free of charge, you need to do as follows:

Residents of Tallinn

  • Purchase a Smartcard (est) for the price of 2 €. The cards can be purchased in various points of sale.
  • Personalise the card for 1 € at the point of sale or for free at www.pilet.ee/yhiskaart.
  • Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.

If a person has personalised his Public Transport Card and, after that, would registered him as a resident of Tallinn in the Public Register, the person would need to personalise his Public Transport Card again. Otherwise, the validator would indicate the red light.

School students listed in the Estonian Education Information System e-database (studying in the Estonian school)

  • Purchase a Public Transport Card for the price of 2 €. The Public Transport Card can be replaced by another contact-free card (e.g., a student card) meeting the standard supporting RFID technology.
  • Personalise the card, it could be done for 1 € in the point of sale or for free at www.pilet.ee/yhiskaart
  • Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.

Public Transport Card is not required from:

  • Children of pre-school age,
  • Passengers travelling with children below the age of 3,
  • Children with disabilities,
  • Passengers aged 16 and over with profound disabilities,
  • Individual accompanying passengers with severe or profound visual disabilities,
  • Children without parental care,
  • Children residing in a social welfare institution,
  • Passengers who contributed to clean-up operations at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant,
  • Passengers classified as or equated to victims of repression.

Passengers who are entitled to the discounted travel indicated in the Public Transport Act are not obliged to validate their journeys, but may still do so.

Passengers aged 65 years and over:

  • Carry along a proof of identity.
  • Upon wish, you would get a Public Transport Card for free from any post office of Estonian Post Ltd. in Tallinn. Validation is not obligatory, but recommended.


Priced public transport

To travel with a ticket, do as follows:

Passengers that are not residents of Tallinn travelling with a full-price ticket

  • Purchase a Public Transport Card for the price of 2 €. The cards can be purchased in various points of sale.
  • Load money onto your Public Transport Card or buy an e-ticket. It can be done at a point of sale, with a mobile phone, or on Internet.
  • Validate your journey with the Public Transport Card immediately after entering the public transport vehicle.

You can personalise your Public Transport Card, but it is not mandatory. In case of a loss of a personalised card, it is possible to transfer the money or the ticket to a new card, whereas in case of a non-personalised card you would lose the money or the ticket loaded onto the card.

Only full-price tickets are sold to non-personalised cards. Personalised card enables make use of any discounts to which they are entitled.
