Official opening of the Advent season in the Old Town

Official opening of the Advent season in the Old Town

Tallinn official opening of the Advent season 2024 Old Town Wonderfully Wonderful poster December is a month of hope and miracles. As the year comes to a close, whether it was easy or difficult, something new is already on the horizon. A new hope that we can all eagerly look forward to in the glow of candlelight.

Christmas symbolises love, happiness and peace, both within us and around us. In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, we often get the feeling that these are all just dreams we can never quite reach.

In reality, life is always wonderful, we just need to pause for a moment and notice the wonders around us. Not focus only on what is missing, but rejoice in what we already have. Joy should never be underestimated. Finding joy from small things grows and multiplies, until small things become big and the big things even bigger.

When can we say a miracle has happened? When a big dream unexpectedly comes true. For some, it's a loving family or a new relationship; for others, it's good health, a tropical vacation, or something else entirely. People have always been guided by faith. Life tends to turn out the way we believe it will. That's why it's important to believe in miracles– because that's the only way they can one day become real.

Come and let’s celebrate the start of the Christmas season together!

Programme

16:00 Lighting of the first Advent candle
Venue: Town Hall Square

We will gather once again in the Town Hall Square to light the first Advent candle on the large Christmas tree and open our hearts to the Christmas season. The ceremony will be attended by the Mayor of Tallinn Jevgeni Ossinovski and Tallinn Provost Jaak Aus, who will be accompanied by beautiful Christmas carols performed by the choirs of the Tallinn congregations of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.

After the traditional ceremony of lighting the first Advent candle, all are welcome to enjoy the light shows.

16:30, 17:30 and 18:30 Light Theater “The Gift”
Venue: Vilde Square (corner of Harju and Niguliste streets)

“The Gift” is a poetic story that focuses on human relationships and the true meaning of compassion during Christmas. Through light, shadows and projections, it creates a symbolic journey of caring and human warmth. Through the two protagonists, it shows how even the smallest gesture of care can change someone's life.

17:00, 18:00 and 19:00 Light Theater “Dreamcatcher”
Venue: Bishop's Garden (Toom-Kooli street 21)

The dreamcatcher, an ancient and mysterious object, is often associated with dreams. We are used to chasing dreams, but often life can be overshadowed by darkness. Difficulties, worries and doubts create shadows that cloud our hopes and create fear.

A dreamcatcher helps us believe in miracles. By hanging one at the centre of our homes, we can create a safe and calming environment that empowers and nurtures our dreams. As we look at the intricate patterns and decorations of the dreamcatcher, we realise that life is also full of complex patterns and journeys. Even when our dreams seem utterly impossible and difficult, it is through perseverance and trust in ourselves that we can find clarity and light, even in the darkest of times. The dreamcatcher is not only a beautiful and mysterious ornament; it’s also a profound and enigmatic symbol that reminds us of our inner strength and ability to find light even during the darkest of times.
