When information and communication tools no longer work

When information and communication tools no longer work

CODE OF CONDUCT
  • Write down, in a safe place, the phone numbers of the most important people you might need to contact in a crisis (e.g. loved ones, extended family, neighbours, emergency contact numbers).
  • Get a battery, dynamo or solar-powered radio. You can also listen to news and crisis information on a car radio.
  • To watch free-to-air TV channels, use a room or roof antenna.
  • Save battery power on mobile phones and smart devices. Mobile internet will work as long as the back-up network is working and the battery is charged. In the event of a major power outage, mobile internet service may be switched off to maintain mobile call service.
  • Use public WiFi networks and internet points when necessary.
  • Keep your battery bank charged at all times so you can recharge your mobile phone when you need to.
  • Also exchange information with your neighbours.

HOW TO CALL AN EMERGENCY NUMBER IF YOUR OPERATOR HAS NO RECEPTION?
  • Make the SIM card in your phone inactive. From a phone with buttons, simply take out the SIM card and then call 112. A smartphone must be restarted, then leave the SIM card PIN code unentered and call 112.
  • After the emergency call, reactivate the SIM card. Only if the SIM card is activated, and if there is coverage, can the rescue operator call you back if necessary.
  • If you don't have any phone service, go to the nearest rescue station, police station, ambulance base or hospital emergency department to call for help.
