Jaan Poska House in Kadriorg (Poska Street 8) is the former residence of Jaan Poska, one of the founders of Estonian statehood. He was the first Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs, a diplomat and a leader of the Estonian delegation in the Tartu peace talks. Jaan Poska lived in this house with his wife and eight children. At home, Poska was often working or holding meetings with other advocates for Estonian statehood. The Poska residence is regarded as the first Estonian salon in Tallinn.
Jaan Poska purchased this Kadriorg wooden villa with its large garden in 1908. The building featured a single floor when it was completed in 1878 by the architect Nikolai Thamm. Poska ordered the design for the extension from engineer Voldemar Lender, who was his predecessor in the position of mayor of Tallinn.
The lower floor of the Poska residence featured two halls, where Jaan, along with his wife Constance, met with guests ranging from Estonian cultural figures to Russian holders of power and foreign diplomats. The lower floor also featured Jaan Poska’s cabinet, the couple's bedroom, children’s rooms, a kitchen, servant room and a winter garden. The forward-thinking Jaan Poska also equipped his house with modern technology by early 20th-century standards, including electricity, a vacuum cleaner, a telephone and a gramophone.
Jaan Poska lived in this building from 1908 until his death in 1920, only a couple of months after the signing of the Treaty of Tartu. After Poska’s death, the family continued to reside in the building for a couple of years, until its maintenance became too burdensome and Poska’s wife started renting it out.
From 1929-1935, the building was rented out to the Embassy of Italy. After 1936, it was used by the Estonian Women’s Union. During the Soviet occupation, the building was used by the military-sports organisation DOSAAF (ALMAVÜ). In the early 1990s, the building was occupied by vagrants who looted it and started fires. The building was disintegrating and on the verge of destruction, with much of the interior destroyed.
In 2000, a group of idealistic individuals took it upon themselves to halt the disintegration and demolition of the building. The Jaan Poska Memorial Fond Foundation was founded, led by the Estonian Heritage Society and the Konstantin Päts Museum NGO. Discussions for the fund with the Tallinn City Government reached their goal in 2006, when the city government, led by Jüri Ratas, decided to take control of the Jaan Poska House and restore it. After extensive restoration works, the Jaan Poska House was opened in 2008.
The Jaan Poska House is a heritage protection monument and is classified as a valuable example of Estonian wood architecture. Read more in the National Registry of Cultural Monuments. Sadly, only a few details and items of the original interior remain. The new interior design (by interior architect Maile Grünberg) follows the spirit of Poska’s times, drawing inspiration from historical photos of the Poska residence.
The Jaan Poska building is currently used as a representative building of the City of Tallinn, often used for hosting receptions and formal meetings. The Jaan Poska Memorial Room exposition is set up and managed in the authentic winter garden by the Jaan Poska Memorial Fund.
