Natural values

Tallinn has a number of important natural objects in the Lasnamäe and Pirita districts, including the Maarjamäe Clint, the area from the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds to Kose that was designated in 1992. Klindi Park is a part of the large-scale Baltic Clint that comprises highest and most observable part of the clint located within Tallinn’s borders. Along with the Maarjamäe Clint, another large and beautiful scenic area is the Pirita River Valley, an area that defines the eastern area of the park.

At the bottom of the clint, there are also a number of springs that get its water from the water etched in Lasnamäe’s limestone fissures, as well as from Varsaallikad, the Purde waterfall and the Katleri stream. The Hundikurstiku stream converges with the Clint near the Tallinn Song Festival Grounds.

The alvar on the Maarjamäe Clint is a habitat for numerous valuable plant communities in which there are a number of rare plant species. There is also a forest located on sections of the clint. Its distinctive microclimate has established perfect conditions for the creation of a unique kind of forest, and because of its lushness, it can be described as a ‘northern jungle’.
