Kalamaja Museum

Kalamaja Museum

The Kalamaja Community Museum is located at Kotzebue 16, Tallinn.

From the first moment, the Kalamaja Community Museum was created together with the people of the neighbourhood. The museum, which was opened in September 2021, is a cosy place for both locals and visitors where the exhibitions and audience programs help people get to know the local history, the present day and the future. The Kalamaja Museum summarises a part of the colourful essence of the area.
The Kalamaja Community Museum is created together with the people of Kalamaja. This method of creating a museum is unique in Estonia. The museum began with a survey conducted among the locals in the spring of 2018. This was followed by brainstorming sessions and meetings. Dozens of former and current residents of Kalamaja have participated in creating the exhibition by donating items and sharing stories about life in Kalamaja.

The Kalamaja Museum Garden

The museum has a garden that houses exhibitions and where you can learn about plants in the educational garden and the lovely greenhouse. Exploring the garden is free for everyone and it is open during the opening hours of the museum. There are some planter boxes left in the museum garden, so if you would like your own planter box in the museum, you can write to [email protected].

Permanent exhibition

“A Village in the Middle of the City. Stories from Kalamaja”
The exhibition tells the story of the area through six archetypes characteristic of Kalamaja: the Kalamaja man, the Kalamaja woman, the Kalamaja child, the Kalamaja ancestor, the Kalamaja life artist and the Kalamaja animal. The archetypes from different times and periods tell stories from the Middle Ages to today. Walking through the museum tells the story of the houses in the area through the local people. The guest can explore the cellar, corridor, garage, living room... but there’s also an exhibition in the toilet. Younger visitors can play in the Tallinn-house-style dollhouse in the family area of the museum.
The museum also has a gallery where locals and others can turn their ideas into exhibitions or introduce their collections to the audience.
Though the building may be small, the museum's collections are extensive. That is why you can often find our exhibitions on the streets of the area.
