Kiek in de Kök Fortification Museum
The Fortification Museum is an over 500-metre-long museum complex.
It is made up of four towers: Kiek in de Kök, the Maiden Tower, the Marshal or Stable Tower and the Short-Leg Gate Tower. The Fortification Museum also includes the mysterious underground bastion passages and the Carved Stone Museum housed there.
The Kiek in de Kök exhibition gives an overview of the historic war efforts, how it suffered under the plague and famine and also talks about crime and punishment in the medieval city.
The Maiden Tower offers views of the Old Town. The exhibition in the vaulted cellar introduces the legend of the Danish national flag Dannebrog in Estonian art and Danish symbols in Estonian heraldry.
The bastion galleries were built in the 17th-18th century. The expedition through the Bastion Underground Passages introduces the history of the defensive structure and the most important military events. It’s also the location of a vast collection of carved stones.
