Tallinn City Theatre

Tallinn City Theatre

The Tallinn City Theatre was founded in 1965 and the opening performance was held on 13 February 1966 with the play ‘Judge Us, People!’. At the time, the theatre was called the Estonian Youth Theatre and it was founded by Voldemar Panso and the second graduating class of the Tallinn Conservatory’s drama department. About a dozen actors from the Estonian Drama Theatre joined the new theatre.

The theatre’s current image and new creative endeavour began during the 1992/93 season when Elmo Nüganen and Raivo Põldmaa started working at the theatre as the artistic director and general manager respectively. Two years later, the theatre was renamed the Tallinn City Theatre. The first play under this new name took place on 15 August 1994. The theatre, which had been struggling with the lack of space, was combined with several nearby buildings. Now the City Theatre makes up a large and unique complex with seven different theatre halls and a spacious open-air stage.

Artistic director Elmo Nüganen said that the 2020/2021 season would be his last in the position. The theatre’s general manager at the time, Raivo Põldmaa, was also leaving. On 19 May 2021, the Tallinn City Government chose Mihkel Kübar as the theatre’s new general manager. He chose Uku Uusberg as the new artistic director.
The Tallinn City Theatre is a municipal theatre.
