Tallinn Philharmonic Society
The Tallinn Philharmonic Society is a concert organisation located in Tallinn Old Town in the historic House of the Brotherhood of the Blackheads on Pikk Street 26. The organisation created in 1994 by the Tallinn City Government contains two branches working in different genres: international music theatre festival the Brigitta Festival, and Estonia’s only professional chamber orchestra with a permanent lineup, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.
The 20-member Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, founded in 1993, resides on the first floor of the House of the Brotherhood of Blackheads in the Brothers’ Hall but they hold concerts for the public in the familiar White Hall. Numerous concert trips have taken the orchestra to many concert halls here and abroad – the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Konzerthaus Berlin and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, to name a few. Tõnu Kaljuste, Juha Kangas, Eri Klas and Risto Joost have been the Orchestra's creative directors. From the 2019/2020 season, the founder of the Orchestra Tõnu Kaljuste has retaken the position.
The Brigitta Festival was founded in 2005 by Eri Klas. Under his creative supervision, the Festival grew into the main annual summer musical event in Tallinn. The festival, which takes place in the ruins of St Bridget’s Convent, has had world-renowned and up-and-coming performers who for years to come remember the towering medieval walls in the sunset and the dusk of the summer nights. The festival’s programme has on average 6-7 high-quality professional music theatre performances and features artists from Argentina to South Korea. The festival’s artistic director from 2002-2016 was Eri Klas, from 2017-2018 Risto Joost. The 2019 program was dedicated to maestro Eri Klas’ 80th birthday and was created by a group of his supporters. The artistic director for the 2020 festival was Dimitri Bertman and the 2022 festival’s artistic director was Tõnu Kaljuste.
The Tallinn Philharmonic Society’s administration has dedicated people who work together to ensure the operation of the house and the high quality of performances. The House of the Brotherhood of Blackheads holds different events from exclusive gatherings and city events to weddings and birthday parties.
The Directors of the Tallinn Philharmonic have been Urmas Kõiv, Tarmo Leinatamm, Jüri Leiten and Mark Lõhmus. From 2014, Margit Tohver-Aints has been the Director responsible for the activities of the collective. Lennart Sundja has been the Director of the Tallinn Philharmonic Society since 2022.
The Tallinn Philharmonic Society has organised many different concert series, such as Classics with Klas; Icons; Brunchert, Mozart and Mahler; Salon; Meetings; Portrait and newer series Philharmonic Youth; Organ Magic; ‘Kõrvaring’ and Persona.
