Baltic Station closed for rail traffic next week
Due to the construction of a pedestrian tunnel on Paldiski road, Baltic Station will be closed for rail traffic from July 15 to 21. During this period, the starting and ending points for passenger trains will be at Lilleküla, Kitseküla, and Tallinn-Väike train stops.
During the temporary interruption of rail traffic, the tunnel will be installed into the railway embankment. For the tunnel installation, the railway will be temporarily removed, and the railway embankment will be excavated. These construction works will also take place at night, and residents of nearby buildings will be notified in advance.Pedestrian traffic will be directed to the Baltic Station side of the railway viaduct, in a closed and separated lane. One lane will be open for car traffic.
Westbound trains (Keila, Kloogaranna, Paldiski, Turba) will temporarily terminate at Lilleküla station from July 15 to 21. Eastbound and southeast-bound trains (Aegviidu, Narva, Rakvere, Tartu, Valga, Koidula) will have Kitseküla as their temporary starting and ending station. Southwest-bound trains (Rapla, Türi, Viljandi) will operate to and from Tallinn-Väike during this period. There will be no replacement buses between the temporary stops and Baltic Station, so passengers must use city transport.
The Tallinn Transport Department will provide free travel on public transport lines that pass through Ülemiste, Tallinn-Väike, and Tondi railway stops during the railway interruption period. Free travel will be available on trolleybus No. 4, tram No. 4, buses No. 7, 12, 13, 15, 45, 49, 54, 64, and 65 towards Ülemiste, and buses No. 5, 14, 16, 18, 18A, 20, 20A, 28, 32, and 36 towards Tondi and Tallinn-Väike, as well as bus No. 73.
The temporary traffic arrangements will also affect train departure and arrival times, so it is advisable to check them before traveling. All passenger information regarding the changes can be found on Elron’s website at www.elron.ee/en/railway-repairs
The pedestrian tunnel being built at the intersection of Paldiski road and Tehnika street will provide safe passage through the railway embankment, better connecting the Kristiine, Kesklinn, and Põhja-Tallinn districts. This new solution will direct pedestrians to a new illuminated tunnel instead of the existing narrow walkway under the railway viaduct, significantly enhancing safety.
As part of the landscaping work, a grass cover will be installed, and ten Thunberg barberry shrubs will be planted on Ristiku street. Existing trees will be protected during construction with boards secured around their trunks.
The tunnel is expected to open for pedestrian traffic this fall, although landscaping and minor construction work will continue until the contract's end date in February 2025.
Pedestrian tunnel construction process can be followed on the website www.tallinn.ee/paldiskitehnikatunnel.
