Bike path construction begins on Mere and Kaarli puiestee

Bike path construction begins on Mere and Kaarli puiestee

Due to construction work, the Mere puiestee bus stop will be closed from July 3, and the Vabaduse väljak stops on Kaarli puiestee towards the city centre will be closed from July 8. The project includes the construction of new bike and pedestrian paths, tree planting, and the reconstruction of water and sewer systems.

Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere stated that the comprehensive reconstruction of bus stops will significantly improve the convenience and safety of bike paths in Tallinn. "If you can ride a bike on a separate lane without having to pass through the bus stop on a scooter, even those who do not want to ride a bike will benefit from the solution built according to Tallinn's bike strategy," said Pere.

Construction work on the Mere puiestee bus stop towards the city centre will begin on July 3. Due to construction work on Mere puiestee, the bus stop on Mere puiestee towards the city centre will be closed for bus lines No. 21, 21B, 41, 41B, 73, 91, 92, 93, and 96. Bus passengers are advised to use the Viru stop. The signal-controlled pedestrian crossing near Viru väljak will remain open. The road will reopen to traffic on August 18.

Reconstruction of the Vabaduse väljak bus stops on Kaarli puiestee towards the city centre will begin on July 8. During construction, one or two lanes will remain open for car traffic, depending on the work stage. Pedestrian and bicycle access will be maintained on the designated sidewalk area. Bus lines No. 21, 21B, 22, 41, and 41B will temporarily stop at Tõnismägi, while lines No. 2, 3, 9, 11, 16, 23, 35, 40, 46, and 67 will stop at Vabaduse väljak on Estonia puiestee. The road will reopen to traffic on August 30.

"Summer is the least disruptive time to carry out road works in the city, as many are on vacation or working from home during the school holidays," said Kesklinn’s District Governor Sander Andla. " We ask those traveling by car to allow more time than usual or, if possible, use public transport or bicycles to help reduce traffic," added Andla.

Landscaping and sidewalk paving work will continue until October 14.

All existing greenery in the construction area will be preserved, with trees protected during the works. The project includes planting 76 common yews, 124 common fescues, 59 Faassen’s catmint, 32 Drammer’s barberry, and 43 shining coneflowers on Kaarli puiestee.

The construction work is being carried out by Atemo OÜ, with supervision by TPJ Inseneribüroo OÜ. The contract amount is approximately 939,000 euros, of which nearly 198,000 euros is co-financed by AS Tallinna Vesi for the construction of water and sewer lines (amounts do not include VAT). The contractual deadline for the works is 14 December 2024.

The changes also affect public bus lines in Harju County. Information about these changes is available on the North-Estonia Public Transport Center's website: ytkpohja.ee
