City leaders and hospital representatives discuss next steps toward Tallinn Hospital

City leaders and hospital representatives discuss next steps toward Tallinn Hospital

On Thursday, representatives from the City of Tallinn, East Tallinn Central Hospital, West Tallinn Central Hospital, and Tallinn Children's Hospital met to discuss the consolidation of the hospital network. The meeting focused on analyzing the current situation and deciding on the composition of the working group for Tallinn's hospital project.

Tallinn Mayor Jevgeni Ossinovski emphasized the importance of collaboration between different parties: "We aim to reach the realization of Tallinn Hospital in cooperation with the state to ensure the continued provision of world-class healthcare. This includes a comprehensive consolidation of Tallinn’s hospital network and its future joint management by the city and the state. As part of this solution, we also want a clear perspective and funding plan for the construction of the new Tallinn Hospital."

Deputy Mayor Karl Sander Kase noted that concrete agreements are essential for moving forward: "We briefed the heads of Tallinn's hospitals on our recent meeting with the Minister of Health. We will continue discussions with the state on the consolidation of hospitals, but it is crucial to reach a specific agreement on investments in Tallinn's hospital network. The role of Tallinn's hospitals in Estonia's healthcare system is significant, and there is a mutual understanding that these investments cannot solely fall on the shoulders of the City of Tallinn. We will continue the discussions and hope to achieve a positive outcome."

Arkadi Popov, Director of West Tallinn Central Hospital, highlighted the importance of high-quality healthcare: "I am pleased to represent the hospital in the working group, which also includes representatives from the Ministry of Social Affairs and the city, where we will discuss the future formation of Tallinn Hospital. I firmly believe that the primary goal of this process is to improve access to quality healthcare in both Tallinn and Northern Estonia more broadly. One key aspect of achieving this goal is the construction of a new hospital building to provide medical care in better conditions than the largely outdated buildings we have now. I hope that our joint efforts with the state will result in concrete agreements and guarantees to make the construction of a new hospital a realistic prospect in the near future."

Tarmo Bakler, Director of East Tallinn Central Hospital, pointed out the importance of the involvement of all parties in decision-making: "We received an overview of the discussions initiated by the state and the city last week on the topic of hospital mergers. It is natural that the heads of Tallinn's hospitals are included in the working group because, in addition to general issues, it is necessary to discuss and decide on specific topics directly related to the operation and development of the hospitals."

The city’s working group focused on hospital consolidation includes Tallinn's Deputy Mayor for Social and Health Affairs Karl Sander Kase, Tallinn City Secretary Kairi Vaher, Head of Tallinn's Social and Healthcare Department Raimo Saadi, Chairman of the Board of West Tallinn Central Hospital Arkadi Popov, Chairman of the Board of East Tallinn Central Hospital Tarmo Bakler, and Chairman of the Board of Tallinn Children's Hospital Konstantin Rebrov.
