Get your pet microchipped for free at the Tallinn Old Town Days
Bring your cat, dog, or rabbit for free microchipping, registration in the pet register, and rabies vaccination on Saturday, 7 June by Snelli Pond.
At the pet-themed area near Snelli Pond, various animal welfare organisations and institutions will be on hand to offer advice on how to best care for your pet. The City of Tallinn, in cooperation with the Agriculture and Food Board, will provide an opportunity for pet owners to get their animals microchipped for free and, if needed, vaccinated against rabies.“Pets are wonderful companions, but they require care like any other member of the family. Sometimes they wander off, causing distress for their owners. To make sure these situations end well, it's essential for pets to be microchipped and for owner details to be up to date in the pet register,” said Esme Kassak, acting Head of the Pet Welfare Service at the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department.
Representatives of the City of Tallinn can be found at the Tallinn Municipal Police Department tent, next to the Agriculture and Food Board.
“The Municipal Police often receives complaints about violations of the rules for keeping dogs and cats. It’s our job to respond, engage with pet owners, and explain the existing requirements and shared agreements that help create a pleasant and safe urban environment for everyone. At Käpakäik, we’ll be available to answer questions and demonstrate good pet ownership practices. One of our inspectors will even get their own pet’s vaccinations done on-site,” said Krislin Pärt, Head of the District Work and Proceedings Division at the Municipal Police Department.
Registering pets in the pet register is mandatory in Tallinn. As of early June, over 33,000 dogs and 39,000 cats are registered. In reality, the number of pets is higher, but not all have been entered into the system. It’s also recommended to register other types of pets, such as rabbits or parrots—though the method of marking may vary depending on the species.
The pet area will be open at the Tallinn Old Town Days on Saturday, 7 June, from 11:30 to 15:30. In addition to the organiser of Käpakäik (pet-themed event), the Estonian Society for the Protection of Animals, the following organisations will also be present: Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department, Agriculture and Food Board, Tallinn Municipal Police Department, NGO Animal Shelters, and Loomus.
