Kadaka puiestee bridge to open to traffic on the evening of 19 May

In July last year, reconstruction began on the Kadaka puiestee bridge in Tallinn, which had reached the end of its service life and become structurally unsafe. As of Monday, the new bridge will be complete and open to traffic. Public transport will return to its regular routes in the first half of next week.

According to the original contract, the bridge was scheduled to reopen on 30 June 2025, but construction has progressed ahead of schedule thanks to smooth cooperation with the contractor.

Previously, the public had been informed of the possibility that the bridge might be partially reopened during the winter. However, during construction, underground utility networks needed extensive reconstruction, and the city installed a new stormwater connection line—eliminating the possibility of reopening traffic six months earlier than planned.

“I want to thank Nõmme residents for their patience over these long months. The project is now a month ahead of schedule, and next year the city won’t need to dig a four-metre-deep hole into Tähetorni Street to install new water infrastructure,” said Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere.

A recommendation to reconstruct the bridge was made in a 2020 expert assessment by Ehituse ja Tarkvara Inseneribüroo OÜ. The project was commissioned by the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department, with construction carried out by Atemo OÜ and supervision by TPJ Inseneribüroo OÜ. The contract value of the construction works is approximately €1.85 million, of which about €134,000 was co-financed by Tallinna Vesi for the construction of water and sewer lines.

The contractor Atemo OÜ demolished the old viaduct and built a new reinforced concrete bridge, which is 35 metres long, 5 metres high, and 17 metres wide. The bridge includes pedestrian and bicycle paths with a total width of 5.5 metres. In addition, a footpath was built next to the viaduct to connect the lower and upper walking and cycling paths. The contractor also installed electrical cables and constructed the road foundation.

“I commend the builder for completing the work successfully and for their efforts to open this key entry and exit point to the city ahead of schedule,” said Erkki Vaheoja of the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department.
Some work will continue after the bridge opens to traffic, including the finishing of sidewalks, lighting, and road markings. The final completion deadline for the project is February 2026.
