The Koidu tänav street space architecture competition has begun
Tallinn has announced a single-stage architecture competition to seek out a new design that would fit the concepts of Koidu tänav as a home street as well as the main street of Uus-Maailm. The competition covers the area between Suur-Ameerika tänav, Koidu tänav and Pärnu maantee.
The competition aims to redesign the currently car-centric Koidu tänav, transforming it into a city space that focuses on pedestrian and cyclist traffic while also uniting the subdistrict. The competition helps the street gain a unique identity, balance the street environment, create a greener atmosphere and provide new recreational spaces for all audiences.According to Tallinn Deputy Mayor Vladimir Svet, the president of the competition’s jury, the city has set the goal of redesigning the city space of Koidu tänav as an open and inclusive process. “Through the architecture competition and the collaboration of architects, engineers, and citizens, we aim to create a widely recognised construction project that will help establish the new city space solution in the coming years,” said Svet. “The winners of the competition will be made the designers for the architectural part of the Koidu tänav reconstruction project. The new city space solution will be carried out in the coming years.”
In selecting the winning design, the jury will focus on the needs of Koidu tänav residents and the nearby Tallinn High School of Humanities, while also keeping an eye on the strategic goals of the Tallinn 2035 development strategy "Home that includes the street”.
The competition will be carried out in an inclusive way: the five best works will also be presented to the public before the jury’s final decision. In addition to the deputy mayor, the jury includes the Kesklinn subdistrict elder Monika Haukanõmm, architects Jaak-Adam Looveer, Margus Maiste and Katrin Hoov, landscape architect Remi Kübar and city office and department representatives.
The prize fund for the architecture competition is 43,000 euros, with first place being awarded 15,000 euros. The competition will be carried out by the Tallinn Strategic Management Office, along with Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department, the Estonian Association of Architects and the Estonian Association of Landscape Architects.
The deadline for submitting competition works to the public procurement registry is 17 November 2023. The competition reference number is 266487. You can keep track of the Koidu tänav reconstruction process at www.tallinn.ee/koidu.
