Modern sports and leisure area to be developed in Merivälja Park

Modern sports and leisure area to be developed in Merivälja Park

The Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department, in collaboration with the Pirita District Government, is planning the renovation of Merivälja Park. The goal is to preserve the park's natural charm while offering modern and versatile opportunities for active recreation for visitors of all ages.

Merivälja Park, located in Pirita, will become a vibrant and scenic environment catering to both nature enthusiasts and sports lovers. New features will provide leisure opportunities for all age groups, from toddlers to seniors.

“A well-designed public space near people's homes enhances their daily quality of life. We are renewing Merivälja Park while respecting its unique character and significance to the local community,” said Tallinn Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere.

The development of Merivälja Park will take place in four stages, aligned with budgetary constraints. The first phase, set to be completed in 2025 as part of the participatory budget, includes a low-level adventure course designed for students. The course will have two sections: a simpler one for younger children and a more challenging one for older kids.

Subsequent phases will include a slide-equipped playhouse and spring rocker for toddlers, a climbing pyramid, and a sand kitchen for slightly older children. For adults, the existing volleyball court will be renovated, and an outdoor gym will be built. A separate sports area will also be created for seniors.

Various modern seating and picnic areas with tables and benches will be installed throughout the park, offering private spots for picnicking. Hammocks will be spread across the park to provide resting spots for both shade seekers and sunbathers. The existing pond will be cleaned, and sun loungers will be placed along its edge.

Key pathways will be renovated, and additional features like information boards about Merivälja Park, a drinking fountain, bike racks, a bike maintenance station, and waste bins will be installed.

“I am delighted that the park’s renewal considers visitors of all ages and that the city is investing in creating a modern and versatile leisure area for the enjoyment of Merivälja residents. It’s especially important to me that the park’s natural beauty is preserved,” said Doris Raudsepp, Pirita District Governor.

To maintain and enhance biodiversity in Merivälja Park, new plant species will be added to support local insects, birds, and small animals. The park will see the addition of 6 ornamental trees, 9 conifers, 35 tall shrubs, 256 medium shrubs, 502 low shrubs, and 5,444 perennials. Additionally, 4-6 bat houses will be installed.

The order and timeline of the work may be adjusted based on circumstances.
