Night bus usage increases during summer months

Night bus usage increases during summer months

Statistics for the first half of 2024 indicate a significant rise in the use of night buses in May and June compared to the beginning of the year. Tallinn operates six night bus lines, with the most popular routes being towards Mustamäe and Lasnamäe.

Deputy Mayor Kristjan Järvan noted that the introduction of night buses, similar to other European capitals, has been highly successful. "Jokingly, one might say that Tallinn’s public transport has improved so much that people prefer riding the buses at night over sleeping at home. On a more serious note, the user numbers clearly show a demand for this service among city residents," said Järvan.

From January to April, the night buses were used by an average of 1400-1650 people per weekend, but in May and June, the number of users exceeded 2000. This increase is expected as the spring-summer period sees more late-night cultural events in the city centre. In May, an average of 2150 people used the night buses, and in June, the number rose to 2440 per weekend.

A similar number of passengers was recorded last summer, but it should be noted that during the pilot project, the night buses also operated on Thursday nights. The results indicate that adjusting the schedules and operating days after the pilot project has made the service more efficient.

Night buses running during the early hours of Saturday and Sunday are most commonly used between 00:30 and 02:00, with the most popular departure being at 00:30.

Tallinn’s Nighttime Advisor Natalie Mets emphasized that night buses offer a safer travel option during late-night and early morning hours on weekends. "In over a year of night bus operations, there have been no serious incidents. This confirms that night buses are a safe way to travel at night," Mets explained.

Tallinn operates six night bus lines: line 91 to Mustamäe, line 92 to Väike-Õismäe, line 93 to Pelguranna, line 94 to Priisle, line 95 to Viimsi keskus, and line 96 to Vana-Pääsküla. The starting point for all night bus lines is the county lines stop at Balti jaam. Night buses run during the early hours of Saturday and Sunday from 00:30 to 3:30 at 30-minute intervals (the last departure is only from Balti jaam heading out of the city centre). Timetables can be found at bus stops and on the website http://transport.tallinn.ee.
