Pärnu maantee bike path design conditions now open for public review

Pärnu maantee bike path design conditions now open for public review

The City of Tallinn is transforming Pärnu maantee into a European-style urban space from Vabaduse väljak to Kiisa Street. The materials for public review are available until October 15. A public presentation will take place on October 10.

“The transformation of Pärnu maantee aims to create a street that supports business and enhances the living conditions, making it safe for people aged 8 to 80. The solutions are based on recommendations from scientists and experts and are fitting for a Northern European capital city,” said Tallinn Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere.

On the section planned for development from Suur-Karja Street to Kiisa Street, part of the public road will be redesigned, with bike and pedestrian paths supporting Tallinn's development towards sustainable modes of transport. According to the design conditions, there will be safe and comfortable bike paths separated from vehicle traffic, in line with Tallinn's Bicycle Strategy core network requirements. Separate lanes for public transport and private cars will also be created.

To achieve a comprehensive solution, new street lighting, utility installations, crossings, public transport stops, and sidewalks are also planned. The separated paths, smoothly connecting sidewalks, and added seating areas with greenery will make the urban space more comfortable and environmentally friendly while providing better mobility options.

The exact location and scale of buildings will be determined during the design process. If everything goes as planned, construction is expected to start in 2026.

The draft design conditions and accompanying materials can be reviewed from October 2 to 15, 2024, on Tallinn's website at tallinn.ee/parnumnt, where feedback can also be provided. During the same period, the materials will be available for public viewing on weekdays at the Tallinn City Centre Administration (Nunne Street 18).

The public presentation will take place on October 10, 2024, starting at 5:30 pm in the Tallinn City Centre Administration hall.

According to Tallinn's Bicycle Strategy 2017-2027, Pärnu maantee is part of the core cycling network. The redesign of Pärnu maantee and the construction of bike paths contribute to the city's development strategy implementation. The construction of the bike path is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
