Pedestrian tunnel on Paldiski maantee now open

Pedestrian tunnel on Paldiski maantee now open

The construction work that started in June to build a pedestrian tunnel at the intersection of Paldiski maantee and Tehnika Street is nearing completion, and the tunnel is now open for public use.

The tunnel, built at the intersection of Paldiski maantee and Tehnika Street, provides a safe and convenient passage under the railway, improving connections between the Kristiine, Kesklinn, and Põhja-Tallinn districts.

"Pedestrians now have a dedicated, well-lit, and convenient tunnel to use instead of the narrow, dark tunnel originally designed for vehicles, making movement much safer," said Tallinn Deputy Mayor Pärtel-Peeter Pere.

The tunnel is now open for passage, though minor construction work will continue until February 2025.
As part of the landscaping work, the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department will lay grass and plant shrubs around the tunnel entrances. The large roadside trees, protected during the construction, will continue to provide shade to pedestrians.

The tunnel is primarily for pedestrians, but a designated lane has been marked for cyclists.

The design and construction of the tunnel were carried out by INF Infra OÜ, with design work by Markelin Project OÜ and Allspark OÜ. The total cost of construction is €1.9 million.
