Pelgu Community Garden opening brings together local gardening enthusiasts

Pelgu Community Garden opening brings together local gardening enthusiasts

On Sunday, September 15, the official opening of Pelgu Community Garden (Pelgu ühisaed) will take place. The opening celebration of the city's largest community garden starts at 2 pm and will be held at the corner of Ehte and Kolde streets, where visitors can enjoy a diverse program.

According to Tallinn's Deputy Mayor, Pärtel-Peeter Pere, Pelgu Community Garden is a prime example of the residents' collaboration and eco-friendly mindset. "Community gardens bring more greenery into the urban space and strengthen community bonds when people from different backgrounds come together in the fresh air," he added.

"Pelgu Community Garden has already brought together over a hundred gardening enthusiasts who have jointly created a wonderful garden," said Külli Tammur, Governor of Põhja-Tallinn District. She noted that opening the garden in the autumn offers other interested individuals a chance to explore this delightful space and gain inspiration for their own gardening projects. "Pelgu Community Garden is not just a gardening area, but the heart of the community, where new friendships and cooperation projects are born," said the Governor.

Pelgu Community Garden, which opened in spring 2024 as an extension of Pelguaed, is located in the Põhja-Tallinn section of the Pollinator Highway (Putukaväil) green corridor. Its activities are coordinated by the MTÜ Pelguaed in collaboration with the Põhja-Tallinn District Administration. The garden offers residents the opportunity to grow food plants and participate in community events. Additionally, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the garden and learn about eco-friendly gardening.

The garden was built as part of the project “Construction and Continued Activities of Pelgu Community Garden,” implemented by the City of Tallinn in collaboration with the MTÜ Pelguaed and funded by the European Economic Area's climate adaptation measure.

The program for the September 15 opening event includes:
  • Musical performances by saxophonist Henri Aruküla, the Türnpu Male Choir, and some surprise performers.
  • A workshop titled “Autumn Maintenance of Garden Beds and Winter Preparations,” led by a gardening lecturer from Tallinn Applied College.
  • Activities for children, hosted by teachers from Kopli Huvikool (Hobby School).
  • Guided tours of the garden in Estonian, English, and Russian.
  • A celebratory cake to mark the occasion.
  • A photo exhibition showcasing Pelguaed through the years.
