School stadiums open daily to the public during autumn break
During the autumn school holiday, school stadiums and sports fields in Tallinn will be open to residents for free daily exercise from 10 am to 6 pm. The sports areas are equipped with inventory boxes, offering balls available for on-site use.
Deputy Mayor Aleksei Jašin noted that the stadiums and sports fields were also open to the public during the summer break and were actively used. “We are delighted that children, young people, and adults alike have found school stadiums to be an additional space for movement and exercise in the urban environment. These open stadiums and sports fields provide a great alternative to spending too much time on digital devices,” Jašin said.
“The more accessible and enjoyable exercise options we provide, the more active people become. This summer, we introduced ball lockers at the stadiums, so anyone can easily borrow balls on-site. Borrow, play, return – simple! This way, no one has to miss out on a game because there’s no ball,” said Deputy Mayor Kaarel Oja. “Next year, Tallinn will hold the title of European Capital of Sport, and in addition to hosting major sporting events, we’re also highlighting everyday fitness activities. Opening school stadiums and sports fields is a key part of supporting that vision.”
Sports fields are open every weekend throughout the year. In October, they are accessible on weekends and during the school break from 10 am to 6 pm, and from November to March, they will be open from 10 am to 5 pm during weekends and holidays. While access to the stadiums is free, schools may charge a rental fee for organizing regular training sessions or league games. Information on open stadiums and reserved times is available on the Tallinn Education Department's website (in Estonian).
The public use of sport fields is managed by the Tallinn Education Department. Daily opening and closing, as well as maintenance, are handled by the district governments. If there are any issues with cleanliness or equipment at the stadiums, residents can report them by calling the city’s helpline at 14410.
