Tallinn acquires ten mobile generators to boost crisis preparedness
The Tallinn Municipal Property Board this week launched a public procurement for the purchase of ten portable generators to ensure the continuity of Tallinn's buildings in the event of a permanent power outage. The deadline for submission of tenders is 20 January at 10am.
According to Deputy Mayor Tanel Kiik, crisis preparedness is a priority area for Tallinn. "Last year we took several steps to make Tallinn as a whole better prepared for crises. This work needs to continue and the procurement of alternative electrical equipment is undoubtedly an important measure to increase preparedness. At the same time, the contribution of the community and of each individual to overall preparedness remains indispensable. We all need to think about what preparations we can make to better cope with unexpected situations," said Tanel Kiik.
"Tallinn, as the largest local government in Estonia, has an important role to play in creating a sense of security and raising crisis awareness among its residents," he said. Kiik continued. "In order to increase crisis preparedness and ensure vital services, the city will acquire a total of ten generators of different capacities, which will enable it to supply buildings with electricity in a crisis. The generators will be used as an emergency source of power for the buildings that are most in need of electricity in a given situation."
With the public procurement, the city will purchase four towable diesel generators with trailers and accessories with a capacity of 160-200 kW, four hand-portable diesel generators with accessories with a capacity of 7-10 kW and two petrol generators with a capacity of 4-6 kW. The capacity of the large towable generators has been calculated to cover the basic needs of a medium-sized building. The smaller manually portable generators have been designed to provide some critical capacity, such as running the heating plant, supplying the electric cookers for cooking or emergency lighting. The amount of equipment to be procured will not be sufficient to cover the electricity needs of all the buildings in Tallinn, but will help to create local crisis centers or, in the event of a regional outage, to provide vital services to customers in social housing in the area, for example.
