Tallinn adopts a strategy for international cooperation
The City of Tallinn has adopted the strategy document “International Tallinn 2035”, aimed at strengthening the city’s international position, fostering strategic partnerships, and improving crisis preparedness. Cooperation with capitals in the Baltic Sea region on civil protection and resilience is one of the strategy’s key focus areas.
The strategy prioritizes the development of partnerships, enhanced cooperation with regional cities on crisis preparedness, and increasing Tallinn’s visibility and influence at the European and global level. A crucial component is also strengthening Tallinn’s representation in international networks to give the city a stronger voice and better access to funding opportunities.According to Krista Kampus, Head of the EU and Foreign Relations Department, internationalisation has become vital for the development of cities. “Cities are competing to attract talent, investment, tourists, and major events. At the same time, rapid urbanisation brings significant social and climate-related challenges. We must stay competitive while also working together,” Kampus explained.
The adopted strategic framework is also a practical tool for city officials and partners. It sets the direction for how different departments of the city administration can jointly shape Tallinn’s international reputation, strengthen partnerships, and increase participation in international initiatives. In addition to crisis preparedness, the strategy highlights the importance of bringing new knowledge and skills into the city organisation and increasing visibility in EU policymaking.
The “International Tallinn 2035” strategy supports the implementation of the city’s overarching development strategy “Tallinn 2035”, which envisions Tallinn as a green global city.
