Tallinn to build five new cycling and pedestrian corridors

Tallinn to build five new cycling and pedestrian corridors

Up to five new railway crossings for pedestrians and cyclists will be built in Tallinn over the next three years.

"The railway has become a major bottleneck in Tallinn's pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, dividing districts and settlements," said Tallinn Deputy Mayor Vladimir Svet. "If we want to motivate people to travel more sustainably, we need to create more convenient connections for them. That is why our focus is increasingly on constructing street-level tunnels in the railway embankment – in Tondi and on Paldiski Road, Endla Street and Tartu Road."

Currently, the construction work of the Tondi multi-level intersection is underway, which will also include the pedestrian and cycle paths that will be level with Tondi Street. The railway will run above other road users. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.

A contract has been signed for the construction of a pedestrian and cycle path tunnel on Paldiski Road. Construction of the tunnel will start in the coming months. This is an important trajectory that will connect the future cycle path on Tehnika Street with the pedestrian and cycle paths on Paldiski Road, which will be developed during the reconstruction of the Hipodroomi intersection.

As a first step towards the creation of a public transport hub at the Kristiine Shopping Centre, underpasses for pedestrians and cyclists will be built on both sides of Endla Street. The projects for building the tunnels are ready and the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department will soon launch a call for tenders to find a contractor.

The city is also planning to create new pedestrian and cycling path tunnels on Tartu Road to better connect the Ülemiste area with the city centre. The project for the construction of two tunnels and a bridge to cross Tartu Road is ready, with the first stage planned for the building of the tunnel on the Ülemiste Shopping Centre side (sketch attached, authors: Practice for Architecture PART, architects Siim Tuksam and Sille Pihlak).

The tunnels planned in the railway embankment on Endla Street and Tartu Road are intended to be built using the European Union Sustainable Urban Mobility measure.
