Tallinn honors European figure skating champion Niina Petrõkina and her coach Svetlana Varnavskaja
Today, February 12, the city of Tallinn recognized and honored local athlete Niina Petrõkina, who made history by winning the gold medal in women’s singles at the 2025 European Figure Skating Championships. The city awarded a total of €7,500 to the athlete and her coach.
Mayor Jevgeni Ossinovski emphasized during the ceremony that Tallinn highly values its athletes’ achievements, which bring recognition to both the city and the country on an international level. "Niina and her coach’s dedication and determination deserve the highest recognition. This gold medal is not just a personal triumph but also a historic milestone that reaffirms Tallinn’s position as a city with a strong sports culture," said Ossinovski. "In 2025, Tallinn proudly holds the title of European Capital of Sport, and moments like these prove that our athletes can compete at the highest European level."
Deputy Mayor Kaarel Oja added: Niina Petrõkina’s exceptional performance is an inspiration for the entire Estonian sports community. Her dedication and perseverance are a great example of how determination leads to the world’s top ranks. I hope this victory also encourages young figure skaters and other athletes to pursue their dreams.
In January 2025, Niina Petrõkina won the gold medal in women’s singles at the European Figure Skating Championships held in Tallinn, becoming the first Estonian to win an ISU Championship title. Her coach, Svetlana Varnavskaja, has played a key role in her success with her dedication and expertise.
The Tallinn City Government decided to award Niina Petrõkina €5,000 and Svetlana Varnavskaja €2,500, recognizing their commitment and outstanding work.
