Tallinn honors President Arnold Rüütel with mourning flags

Tallinn honors President Arnold Rüütel with mourning flags

Saturday, January 11, is a national day of mourning to honor President Arnold Rüütel, who passed away on December 31 last year. All Tallinn city institutions will fly the Estonian flag as a mourning flag on this day.

We invite all residents to join this tribute by raising the Estonian flag as a mourning flag at their homes, businesses, and organizations. Flags should be flown as mourning flags from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. If a flag is not illuminated after dark, it should be lowered at sunset.

Arnold Rüütel served as President of the Republic of Estonia from 2001 to 2006. Highlights of his presidency included Estonia’s accession to the European Union and NATO. Additionally, he played a significant role during the Singing Revolution and the restoration of Estonia’s independence in 1991.

President Arnold Rüütel will be laid to rest on Saturday, January 11, with a funeral ceremony at the Estonia Theatre. Due to the state funeral, temporary traffic restrictions and changes will be in effect on this day.
