Tallinn invites residents to a free winter swim in February

Tallinn invites residents to a free winter swim in February

As part of the Be Active Year, all residents of Tallinn will have the opportunity to go winter swimming for free at the Pirita and Nõmme winter swimming centres. Instructors and a warm sauna will be available on site.

According to Vadim Belobrovtsev, Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, the aim of the Be Active Year  is to offer residents the opportunity to try out different physical activities and to encourage greater interest in healthier lifestyles. "The priority for February is to make the most of the winter season: in addition to skiing and skating, we invite residents to get fit by winter swimming," Belobrovtsev adds.

In February, you can visit the Nõmme Sports Centre's Winter Swimming Centre every Wednesday from 9 to 10 and the Pirita Winter Swimming Centre on Sundays from 12 to 14 free of charge. Instructors and a warm sauna are available on site.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), adults should exercise at least 150-300 minutes a week at moderate intensity or at least 75-150 minutes a week at high intensity to stay healthy. In addition, it is recommended to do muscle-strengthening exercises twice a week and, above all, to reduce the time spent sitting.
For children and adolescents, the WHO recommends at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous activity every day. In addition, at least three days a week should be devoted to vigorous-intensity activities, muscle- and bone-strengthening exercises and less sitting.
