Tallinn libraries extend opening hours during teachers' strike, offering educational activities for children

Tallinn Central Library and its branch libraries will open from 9 AM during the first half of next week, from January 22 to 24, coinciding with the beginning of the teachers' strike. They welcome children and students to come in for reading and studying.

Deputy Mayor of Tallinn, Kaarel Oja, acknowledges that most of society stands in solidarity with the teachers and understands their motives. "However, it's clear that this situation creates significant inconveniences for many families, especially those with younger children who cannot be left alone at home or brought to work. While schools themselves primarily provide alternative activities for students during the strike, our network of libraries and their staff can offer support, and we have decided to do so. The libraries welcome children on their own as well as groups of students gathering at school during the strike days, accompanied by school staff," explained Oja.

Director of the Tallinn Central Library, Kaie Holm, noted that the library always warmly welcomes children and young people. "Here, they can read, play thinking and board games with friends, and find space for studying and quiet concentration. If needed, librarians can give reading recommendations and assist with schoolwork as much as possible. Some libraries also have volunteers to help librarians," said Holm.

The Estonian Educational Personnel Union (in Estonian: Eesti Haridustöötajate Liit) is organizing a nationwide indefinite strike of general education school teachers starting from January 22. From this date, branch libraries, usually closed on Mondays, will be open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Estonian Literature Department (Estonia pst 8) and the Foreign Literature Department (Liivalaia 40) will open an hour earlier at 9:00 AM and close at their usual times. On Tuesday, January 23, and Wednesday, January 24, all libraries will open at 9:00 AM and close at their regular times.
