Tallinn Maritime Days features diverse sports programme

With 2023 being the year of movement, a variety of exercise and sporting activities are taking place at Tallinn Maritime Days. The maritime days sporting activities will be taking place from 14-16 July at the Vanasadam cruise area, Lennusadam, Noblessner harbour campus as well as Pirita.

According to Tallinn Deputy Mayor Tiit Terik, it is important that activities encouraging exercise are represented at Tallinn’s largest maritime festival. “I’m happy to see sporting activities included in this year’s Tallinn Maritime Days as a part of the year of movement.” This year, we are offering a wide variety of sporting activities for guests to either take part in themselves or to cheer for others,” said Terik.

The Tallinn Maritime Days are a multi-faceted and entertaining maritime festival with years of tradition, which has, for the first time, planned an extensive exercise and sporting programme as part of the year of movement. Taking place on 15 July is the Tallinn Open Water swimming challenge, with the ship carrying competitors departing from the mouth of the Pirita River to the Bay of Tallinn. The distances vary from five hundred metres to 3.8 kilometres, and the competition can be viewed from Pirita Beach. At least 150 Estonian and foreign competitors are expected to take part.

Ghetto Games is one of the largest street sports and cultural events in Europe. For the first time, it is being held in Tallinn as part of the Maritime Days sports programme on 15 July at Lennusadam. Taking place are various street sports and cultural activities, such as Ghetto street basketball, football and stadium hockey competitions, dancing and martial arts tournaments and an acrobatics competition. The sporting events are accompanied throughout the day by a DJ and various musical performances. In addition to the Ghetto Games, visitors can challenge themselves with mini-orienteering in the Lennusadam area, and children can take part in the traditional Premia children’s race.

At Noblessner, Wambola Surf is offering all those interested a chance to try their hand at water sports and ride a surf board or e-foil. Neither of these require prior experience but do offer good feelings and sporting challenges.

Taking place at the Tallinn Maritime Days since 2010 is the yearly spectacle that is the Tallinn Race boat racing competition. As is tradition, taking part in the boat race are the elite from both Estonia and Finland in the two person boat classes RS Feva, 29er and 49er. Additionally in the Hansa 303 class are young boat racers Optimist as well as parasailers.

In addition to the boat race, taking place at Lennusadam is the event “Special Sailors”, which offers the opportunity to take to sea, even for those who would find it difficult to do so on a regular sailboat. The event meant for individuals with special needs has been growing in popularity every year.

For the first time, taking place at the area in front of Patarei is the water vehicle competition, which is easily viewed from both the Lennusadam F Wharf or from the sea facing side of Patarei. The water vehicle competition is sure to be a treat for fans of motor sports and speed.
