Tallinn retroactively increases salaries for education workers
The Tallinn City Government decided in today's session to retrospectively increase the minimum salaries of teachers, support specialists, and pre-school teacher aides, effective from January 1, 2024.
As of January 1, 2024, the minimum salary for teachers and support specialists is 1,820 euros per month, and the minimum salary for pre-school teacher aides is 1,092 euros per month. Thus, from January 1 this year, the minimum salary for general education school and vocational education teachers, pre-school and hobby school teachers, and support specialists in Tallinn is 1,820 euros per month (up from 1,803 euros), and the minimum salary for pre-school teacher aides is 1,092 euros per month (up from 1,085 euros).Deputy Mayor Aleksei Jašin noted that the increase in the minimum salary for general education school teachers is matched by an equal increase for teachers and support specialists in municipal educational institutions in Tallinn. "The city's principle is to treat teachers equally in terms of setting minimum salaries, regardless of the type of educational institution, and to link the minimum salary of kindergarten teachers and aides to the minimum salary of teachers," said Jašin.
According to the Estonian Government's regulation of December 21, 2023, the minimum salary for primary and secondary school teachers working full-time is 1,803 euros per month. According to the draft amendment to this regulation sent by the Ministry of Education and Research on May 6, 2024, the new minimum salary for primary and secondary school teachers working full-time will be 1,820 euros per month, applied retrospectively from January 1, 2024.
"Although the government has not yet adopted the regulation, Tallinn has decided on its own initiative to increase the minimum salaries for teachers, support specialists, and pre-school teacher aides," explained Jašin. "The necessary funds for increasing the minimum salaries, totaling 1.01 million euros, are planned in the 2024 supplementary budget, supplemented by an estimated 1.16 million euros from the state budget."
