Tallinn Satisfaction Survey: The people of the capital value their living environment highly

According to a satisfaction survey conducted among city residents at the end of last year, Tallinn is a family-friendly city with a creative atmosphere, where people of different nationalities are treated well and the local people here are considered caring and trustworthy. However, the corona crisis has affected the daily livelihoods of the townspeople.

According to the survey, 21 percent of the respondents have not had enough money for major essential expenses during the past year. Eight percent of the respondents often do not have enough money to buy food and basic necessities, and eight percent have problems repaying debts, and six percent often do not have enough money to pay for utilities. All of the above problems were mentioned more frequently than, for example, in the surveys of the previous two years, and this is worrying. There are more people who have experienced economic problems in North Tallinn than in ohter districts, and more often among non-Estonians than Estonians.

At the same time, last summer the city implemented additional measures and incentives to help citizens in economic difficulties, and with this in mind, the city has also increased its social welware budget this year.

One of the areas that has been significantly affected by the corona crisis last year is mobility and the use of transport. Compared to the previous year, ie 2019, the use of public transport has decreased, but the use of cars and walking has increased. Thus, 42% used a car and 32% used public transport as the main mode of transport on their working day to work, school or other main destination. 18% walked to the main destination, which is significantly more than in previous years. Meanwhile, the residents' assessments of public transport have improved - 46% of Tallinn residents thought that public transport has improved in the last 12 months.

Overall, despite the difficult corona year, the people of Tallinn are satisfied with their lives. Among other things, the satisfaction of the residents with the living environment of the city and their district remains high - as many as 93 percent of the residents are satisfied with the living environment of Tallinn and 92 percent are satisfied with the living environment of their district. In the comparison of city districts, the general satisfaction with the living environment of one's district is highest in Pirita and Nõmme, but lowest in Lasnamäe and Kesklinn.

According to the survey, Tallinners are satisfied with their home, education, health and work, and they have close people to rely on. Compared to the previous year, the general satisfaction with one's life has even increased, as has the share of people who have enough opportunities to spend their free time as they wish. Tallinners have little contact with their neighbors, and as expected, communication has also decreased slightly compared to the previous year.
