Tallinn to sign night bus financing agreement with Viimsi Municipality
The City Government approved today a financing agreement between the City of Tallinn and Viimsi Municipality for the night bus line No. 95, enabling residents to use the service running between Balti jaam and Viimsi keskus during nighttime.
Deputy Mayor Vladimir Svet emphasized the continued development of cooperation with neighboring municipalities, as it ensures effective connections beneficial for all. "It's clear that public transport connections between neighboring municipalities and Tallinn are vital, and we are committed to enhancing these links. We have had a long-standing collaboration with Viimsi Municipality, resulting in the bus line No. 1 to Viimsi keskus and, since January, the addition of night bus No. 95," Svet stated.Night bus lines were initially trialed in Tallinn last year and the pilot project was successful. Since the beginning of this year, night buses operate year-round, with two new routes to Nõmme and Viimsi being added. The Viimsi-bound line travels through the city centre along Toompuiestee, Kaarli, Estonia, and Rävala puiestee, then via Pronksi Street to Narva maantee, continuing along Pirita tee and Merivälja tee, ending at Viimsi keskus.
Viimsi Municipality Mayor Illar Lemetti said the night bus to Viimsi was made possible through effective collaboration with the City of Tallinn. "We started discussions on this matter a few months ago, and after successful negotiations, the plan was realized. Viimsi Municipality is co-financing the project for several reasons. Firstly, because not all events of interest to Viimsi residents in Tallinn finish by midnight on weekends. The night bus service offers greater flexibility in planning their activities. Secondly, it contributes to increasing safety," explained Lemetti.
Tallinn's 2024 budget allocates €830,000 for the night bus service. Viimsi Municipality will compensate Tallinn for the transit through its territory.
From January 1, Tallinn operates six night bus lines: No. 91 to Mustamäe, No. 92 to Väike-Õismäe, No. 93 to Pelguranna, No. 94 to Priisle, No. 95 to Viimsi keskus, and No. 96 to Nõmme. The starting point for all night bus lines is at the Balti jaam county lines stop. Night buses run in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday, from 1:30 AM to 3:30 AM, at 30-minute intervals (the last departure is only from Balti jaam outward from the city centre). Timetables are available at bus stops and online at transport.tallinn.ee.
