Tallinn's municipal school stadiums will remain open year-round for public use

Tallinn's municipal school stadiums will remain open year-round for public use

Beginning September 14, 2024, Tallinn residents will be able to use municipal school stadiums and sports fields free of charge on weekends and during school holidays, throughout the entire year. During the weekdays, these stadiums will be reserved for school activities.

This summer, 42 municipal school stadiums and sports fields were open for residents to enjoy free access. For the first time, sports equipment boxes were placed on the fields, offering balls and other gear for public use. Based on an analysis of summer usage, the Tallinn City Government has decided to continue the project and extend it throughout the year. Now, residents can use the stadiums for free on weekends and during school holidays.

According to Deputy Mayor Aleksei Jašin, this decision was well received by the residents, who made good use of the opportunity to engage in sports in Tallinn, which encouraged the city to expand the initiative to promote more physical activity.

"The summer project, which aimed to encourage people to get outdoors and exercise, was a great success. Many residents, especially young people, found plenty of activities at the open stadiums, gave positive feedback, and welcomed the city’s initiative. The equipment was generally used responsibly, with no significant additional costs,” Jašin stated. "As a result of this success, the city has decided to continue the project, providing joy and movement opportunities year-round—an essential initiative as Tallinn will be the European Capital of Sport in 2025. We encourage all residents to actively use the school stadiums and take care of them, ensuring they bring joy for years to come."

Tallinn’s municipal school stadiums and sports fields will be open on weekends and school holidays, with weekdays reserved for school use. In September, stadiums are open from 10 am to 7 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. In October, they will be open from 10 am to 6 pm on weekends and during school holidays. From November to March, the stadiums will be open from 10 am to 5 pm on weekends and school holidays, and from April to May, they will be open from 10 am to 9 pm.

Negotiations with schools operating under public-private partnerships (PPP) are still ongoing, and the city will provide updates accordingly.

The public use of school stadiums is managed by the Tallinn Education Department, while daily opening, closing, and maintenance are handled by district governments.
