Town Hall Christmas market and candle-lit Christmas tree open up a fairytale Christmas spirit

Town Hall Christmas market and candle-lit Christmas tree open up a fairytale Christmas spirit

Tomorrow, 25 November at 6pm, the traditional Christmas market will open at Town Hall Square and the lights will be lit on Tallinn's central Christmas tree. The traditional first Advent candle will be lit on the tree in Town Hall Square by Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart and Tallinn's Provost Jaan Tammsalu this Sunday at 4pm.

The festive opening of the Christmas market will take place tomorrow at 6pm, when the candles will be lit on the Christmas tree and the light show "Tempus fugit" ("Time flies") will be projected on the Town Hall wall. The 10-minute audiovisual-choreographic performance can be seen for three consecutive evenings (Friday-Sunday) only, including on the first Advent, 27 November at 4pm, when the first Advent candle will be lit on the Christmas tree.

According to Monika Haukanõmme, Tallinn's Old Town and the Christmas market have received attention from all over the world and have been chosen as the best Christmas market in Europe in 2019. "The beautiful tree with its glowing lights, the Christmas market and the cultural programme inspired by Estonian folk culture create a wonderful atmosphere in Raekoja Square, where the Christmas spirit is instantly awakened," said Haukanõmm. "This is one of the reasons why visiting the Christmas market is popular among our people, regardless of age, and attracts a lot of foreign tourists. The Christmas season offers a lot of positive emotions, peace of mind and makes us see everything around us that really matters."

On the first of Advent, the long-awaited Santa Claus arrives and stays in his hut until the end of the Christmas Market. Gift wishes can be left in Santa's mailbox on the wall of his hut. For the little ones in the family, the carousel will be open again - this time there will be three of them!
The Tallinn Christmas Market is open every day from 10am to 8pm. Late-night strollers can buy hot drinks from the market stalls until 10pm and Fri - Sat until 11pm.

This year, the stage of the Christmas Market will be national in form and content: the cultural programme prepared by Hopner House will feature folk dancers and musicians from all over Estonia, in cooperation with the Estonian Folklife Council, the Estonian Choral Society, the Estonian Folk Music and Folk Dance Association.

On weekends, from Friday afternoon to Sunday evening, new performers take to the stage every hour, including the Leigars, Sõleke and Lüü-Türr. Christmas Market guests will also be in for a treat - Sabatanz will be dancing around the Christmas tree and everyone can join in!
