Tram line 5 to resume service in November

Tram line 5 to resume service in November

Tram line 5 will resume service in Tallinn on November 1, operating along the Kopli-Vana-Lõuna route for the first time since 2004. Temporary tram line number 6, which was established due to the construction work in the city center, will continue to operate until October 31.

Deputy Mayor Vladimir Svet noted that the people have shown a growing interest in a tram line connecting Kopli and Pärnu maantee in recent months. "After the full tram service was restored in October, it posed a logistical challenge at the Tondi terminus station, where three tram lines meet, as it didn't have enough space to handle all of them. Since expanding the terminus station isn't possible, we've decided to bring back tram line number 5, which will now run to Vana-Lõuna, just like it did twenty years ago," said Svet.

"In recent years, new residential areas and many jobs have been created in Põhja-Tallinn and Veerenni. We aim to better connect these areas and encourage more people to use trams. Tram number 5 will provide improved access to the Veerenni area and will also be convenient for students and teachers of Tallinn’s Ühisgümnaasium. Managing the traffic flow at Viru roundabout and making the best use of our current tram fleet are still challenging tasks. However, tram number 5 is here to stay," the Deputy Mayor explained.

The final stop for this line will be on Vana-Lõuna Street, next to a tram sculpture created by artist Kaarel Kurismaa. A bus shelter will be added soon, and any necessary additional work will be carried out. Tram schedules will also be synchronized to ensure the smooth operation of line number 5 alongside other tram lines.
