Tram line no. 6 to continue operations in autumn
Temporary tram line no. 6, which was created due to construction works on the Vanasadama tram line, will continue operating on the Tondi-Kopli route at least until the end of September, when tram traffic on all other lines has been restored. Tram lines no. 2 and 4 will restart operation at the beginning of September, with no. 1 and 3 doing so at the start of October. The city is considering the possibility of having line no. 6 operate on a permanent basis.
According to Deputy Mayor Vladimir Svet, there are currently talks of having the currently temporary Pärnu maantee route remain in operation even once regular tram lines resume operating in autumn and no. 6 is scheduled to stop. “Years ago, there was a tram line no. 5 in Tallinn that connected Kopli with the Vana-Lõuna depot,” the deputy mayor explained. “It was closed decades ago due to low demand. Currently however, the temporary tram line no. 6 has shown that demand for a tram line connecting Kopli and Pärnu maantee is once again high. The biggest bottleneck for us is the ability of the Tondi terminal stop to receive trams. It would be difficult to find space for another tram in addition to numbers 3 and 4, and as such we will have to consider how our tram line network as a whole will look once the Vanasadama tram has been established and work has been completed on the Tondi overpass and multi-level crossing.”Construction on the Vanasadam tram line began in March of this year. The result of the Vanasadama tram line construction work will be a nearly 2.5-km-long section of new tram line, which will start at the Kivisilla and Gonsiori intersection and end on Põhja pst. The stated goal of the construction works is to make commuting with various types of public transport vehicles more comfortable with Tallinn’s most important transport hubs being connected to one another, making transfers as convenient as possible.
