In two days, almost 16,000 people voted in Tallinn

In two days, almost 16,000 people voted in Tallinn

By Tuesday evening, 15,922 voters had cast their votes in Tallinn polling places, which is a little over half of the people who had voted in polling places all over Estonia.

A total of 31,284 people had voted using paper ballots in polling places across Estonia by Tuesday evening.

"The number of voters in Tallinn also includes those people whose place of residence is not here and who have cast their votes for the council of their home municipality," explained Priit Lello, the City Secretary and the chairman of Tallinn Electoral Committee. "On Wednesday and Thursday, everyone can still use the opportunity to elect their local council in all major shopping malls in Tallinn. The organizers of the elections are hard at work to make voting as convenient and safe as possible."

In the polling stations open in Tallinn, it is also possible to participate in the elections to any other Estonian municipality council on Wednesday and Thursday from 12 pm to 8 pm, regardless of the voter's place of residence. During these days, a total of thirty-one polling stations are open in Tallinn in shopping malls and other easily accessible places. A valid identity document, such as an ID card, passport, residence permit card or driving license, should be taken to the polling place when going to vote.

In view of the virus outbreak, a larger number of polling stations have been opened to help ensure the safety of elections so that voters can be better dispersed. Voting in six central locations across the city is possible at polling places set up in outdoor tents to reduce risks, including in the parking lots of several shopping malls and the Keskturg.

From Friday to Sunday, ninety-five polling stations will be open all over the city, where voters who are residents of Tallinn can cast their votes for the Tallinn City Council. From Friday to Sunday, it is possible only to vote in your district of residence. A voter is no longer assigned to one particular polling place but may vote in any polling place of their district of residence, e.g, a resident of Mustamäe may cast their vote in any polling station in Mustamäe. Most of the polling places open on Friday and Saturday, October 15-16, from 12 noon to 8 pm, and on Sunday, 17 October from 9 am to 8 pm, are located where polling places have been set up in previous elections.

To vote without any contact, electronic voting is an option, which can be done on the website https://www.valimised.ee/en until Saturday, October 16, at 8 pm. To vote, you need a computer with an Internet connection and an ID card reader, and an ID card or mobile ID with valid certificates. You must know your PIN1 and PIN2 codes to vote. You can change your electronical vote by revoting at the polling place on Sunday, October 17.

In addition to Estonian citizens, citizens of other European Union countries and foreign nationals who have a long-term residence permit or a permanent right of residence can also vote in the election of the local council.

In the Tallinn City Council elections, the eligibility to vote is granted to a person who is at least 16 years of age on the day of election. For the first time, 16-year-olds and older were able to vote in the 2017 local elections.

As the United Kingdom is no longer part of the European Union, British citizens will also be able to vote in 2021 only if they have a long-term residence permit or a permanent right of residence.

In order to vote for the Tallinn City Council elections, the official residence of the voter must be in Tallinn according to the population register no later than September 17 this year. You can check your residence data by signing in at https://www.rahvastikuregister.ee/ with an ID card, mobile ID or Smart-ID.
