The world’s leading developer of software for geoinformation systems (GIS) presents the SAG (Special Achievement in GIS) awards to different organisations from all over the word for making a significant contribution to the development of their organisation and community by adopting GIS software. The group of organisations selected for this year’s SAG award included the Tallinn Urban Planning Department.

Tallinn’s switchover to fare-free public transport was discussed at the workshop on transport financing, held in Perugia as part of the annual meeting of the POLIS network of cities and regions for transport innovation.
European Design Management awards were presented in Paredes, Portugal, and Tallinn won first prize in the public sector category for the new visual identity of Tallinn Transport.
The jury of the Guangzhou International Award for Urban Innovation included Tallinn’s fare-free transport in the 30 most notable projects in the world, having selected it from among 150 submissions.

Tallinn’s aid programme was named as one of the top ten by the European Commission. “The URBACT II urban cooperation development programme in the framework of the EU regional cooperation includes the survey “Cities and the Economic Crisis” on responses of the cities to the economic crisis and on measures adopted for supporting residents,” explained Eha Võrk, Vice-Mayor of Tallinn. The first stage of the survey covered 131 cities from 24 countries. These were whittled down to ten most notable cities and Tallinn was included on this list. “At the second stage of the project, the focus will be on surveying the best practical efforts of Tallinn and the other cities in implementing aid programmes for residents in the context of the economic crisis,” Eha Võrk said. The second stage of the survey will be completed in the autumn. The selection panel included representatives of the European Commission (DG Regio) and several international organisations.
Tallinn Municipal Police Department was recognised by the Police and Border Guard Board for maintaining security during the meeting of NATO Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

Recognition for the “Harju Street Green Area” project from the Estonian Utilities Association.
In May 2007, the Tallinn Transport Department submitted a proposal of a school bus project to the competition “Sustainable Mobility in the City”, organised by the UBC Commission on Transport, and won a €1,000 grant. The grant was used for promoting the school bus project and for publication of campaign materials to encourage students and their parents to use the school bus service.
Tallinn Municipal Police Department was recognised by the Northern Police Prefecture for successful organisation of the Pelgurand Security Day.

Tallinn – Child and Youth Friendly City. The Estonian National Committee of UNICEF awarded Tallinn the title of a Child and Youth Friendly City for the next three years.
European Cultural Heritage Awards – Europa Nostra Medal. In 2005, the Town Hall of Tallinn received the Europa Nostra Medal, a European Cultural Heritage Award. At a European ceremony held on 27 June 2006 in Madrid, the award certificate was presented to Elvira Liiver Holmström, Director of the Tallinn Town Hall, by Queen Sofia of Spain. The Europa Nostra Medal was presented to the Mayor of Tallinn at a ceremony on 15 September 2006 in the Town Hall by Siim Kallas, Vice-president of the European Commission, and Thomas Willoch, Europa Nostra board member. Tallinn won the second prize in the category of architectural monuments for the revival of the last surviving Gothic Town Hall in Northern Europe and the exemplary revealing of all the historical layers of this icon of the great European tradition of municipal power. The award also served as a recognition of the many years of work by Teddy Böckler, the architect of the Town Hall renovation who died in 2005, the Tallinn Cultural Heritage Department that was the authority responsible for the decisions related to the renovation, and the Tallinn City Office that financed the Town Hall renovation and has supported the opening of the building to the public as a museum and concert venue, in addition to continuing in its traditional function as a representative building of the city government.
