Questionnaire about the Põhja-Tallinn green spaces and mowing needs of 2024

There is a lot of biodiversity in the city of Tallinn - alongside us live insects, birds, and various animals, and it is important to provide suitable habitats for them as well.

To increase urban biodiversity, Tallinn has set a goal to consistently reduce the amount of mowing in green areas. For example, the current green area maintenance contracts stipulate less intensive mowing than before.

Last year, we surveyed residents of the Kesklinn district about their use of green areas and mowing needs (learn more about last year's survey here).

This year's questionnaire aims to gather feedback from the residents of Põhja-Tallinn regarding the mowing needs of green areas. To better plan which green areas in the district to mow more or less next season or what type of maintenance to perform, we need information on which green areas are actively used, in what ways, and how often they are used.

Choosing the right mowing regime helps us maintain the surrounding biodiversity by providing a valuable living environment for every part of the ecosystem. Unmown grass and meadows reduce temperatures more effectively than mown grass and maintain inact even during prolonged heatwaves. Meadows reduce the heat island effect, and unmown areas absorb rainfall better. Considering that climate change makes our climate more volatile, alleviating the heat island effect and the ability to absorb rainwater more effectively in cities is becoming increasingly important.

Answering the questions is voluntary. All respondents will remain anonymous and we do not ask for the name or other personal information of the respondent. The answers are used to make a general overview of the topic by the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department.

The questionnaire has been developed in cooperation between the Tallinn Urban Environment and Public Works Department and the Põhja-Tallinn District Administration.
