Estonian ID Card

Estonian ID Card: Electronic Identification and Usage
The ID card is a mandatory identity document for Estonian citizens and European Union citizens residing permanently in Estonia. It is issued by the Police and Border Guard Board.
Check the validity of your digital document, including your ID card, Digi-ID, residence permit card, passport, and others.
Requirements for Using the ID Card Electronically
To use your ID card electronically on a computer or smart device, you need the following:
1. A Valid ID Card
Ensure that your ID card is not expired. You can find the expiration date near the "Valid until" field on your card.
2. Valid Certificates
Certificates are electronic credentials that link your ID card to digital services.
  • If you're unsure whether your certificates are valid, start the software installation, assuming they are active.
  • If you already use your ID card digitally, you can check your certificates using DigiDoc4.
  • If your certificate is suspended, revoked, or expired, DigiDoc4 will notify you.
3. PIN Codes
You received PIN and PUK codes in a secure envelope along with your ID card.
  • If you forgot your PIN1 or PIN2 but still have your PUK code, you can reset your PINs.
  • If you have lost all codes, you must request new ones from the Police and Border Guard Board or an Estonian foreign representation office.
4. Internet Connection
Your computer must have an active internet connection to install and use the ID card software.
5. ID Card Reader
An ID card reader is required for electronic use.
  • You can purchase one at most computer stores, shopping centers, gas stations, and other retail locations.

To use your ID card on your computer, you need to install ID card software, which includes DigiDoc4.
With DigiDoc4, you can:
