Funeral benefit
Funeral benefits is a one-time grant which is not dependent on your income and whose purpose is to help people cover the costs of organising a funeral. The total of the funeral benefits is 250 euros.
You are eligible to apply for funeral benefits if:
- you are organising a funeral for a deceased person whose place of residence according to the Population Registry at the time of death was Tallinn;
- you confirm upon submission of the application that you will cover the costs of the funeral; and
- you submit the request within six months from the day of death of the deceased.
In exceptional circumstances, Tallinn residents can submit a request if they are organising a funeral for a deceased person who did not have a place of residence according to the Population Registry at the time of death (including a stillborn child).
· If the applicant of the funeral benefits is not a relative of the deceased or their place of residence does not correspond to the last place of residence of the deceased, you need to note your relationship with the deceased in the request. In this case, the city district government has the right to ask for proof of the costs of organising the funeral (for example, an invoice from the funeral home).
Funeral benefits are paid to:
- the deceased’s spouse, relative or relative-in-law to whom the death certificate is issued;
- the deceased’s spouse, relative or relative-in-law if the death certificate is issued to a person other than their spouse, relative or relative-in-law;
- another person who is organising the funeral if the relatives and relatives-in-law have waived the rights to funeral benefits;
- a stillborn child’s relative who presents a medical death certificate.
The grant will be paid within 30 days of submitting the request or the necessary documents. The funeral benefits are paid once for one funeral. If multiple people are participating in covering the costs of the funeral, they have to decide among themselves who will apply for the funeral benefits.
