There are (as of October 2019) a total of 194 municipal educational institutions under the jurisdiction of the Tallinn Education Department, including:- 124 preschool institutions (4 nurseries, 120 kindergartens, incl. kindergarten groups in Tallinn Laagna Creativity NGO and Tallinn Helen's School) 57 general education schools (1 kindergarten-primary school, 12 primary schools, 43 gymnasiums, 2 adult gymnasiums)
- 10 hobby schools
- 1 vocational school (Tallinn Kopli Vocational School)
- Tallinn Student Counselling Centre
- Tallinn Teachers' House
Approximately 21,760 children attend kindergartens in Tallinn, 44,000 attend schools, and 7,800 students attend hobby schools. - Tasks

Among other things, the department is tasked with:
- designing and implementing development strategies for general, vocational and hobby education and youth work
- creating an opportunity for preschoolers in Tallinn to attend a kindergarten in their service area
- assigning a municipal school to Tallinn children required to attend school based on their place of residence
- counselling children, young people and their parents
- supporting the personal development of young people by creating conditions for youth work
- organising educational and youth events and projects
- keeping records of children attending pre-school institutions and children in Tallinn who are required to attend school and checking compliance with compulsory schooling
- advising youth work institutions and analysing their activities
- checking compliance with state and Tallinn legislation in institutions under the department’s administration
