Tallinn UNESCO World Heritage Council has new composition

Tallinn UNESCO World Heritage Council has new composition

The Tallinn City Government approved the new composition of the Tallinn UNESCO World Heritage Council.

According to Deputy Mayor Madle Lippus, the renewal of the Council is an important step in giving a new impetus to the development of the Old Town. "Unfortunately, when the Council was formed in 2010, its activities stalled, but now we have decided to reconvene the Council," said Lippus. "The role of the Council is to guide the development of the Old Town and to support the preparation and implementation of its development documents. Not only that, the Council aims to ensure that the Old Town is a enjoyable and pleasant environment for tourism, living and business. The development of the Old Town is of great importance to the city, not just because it is a museum and an object to be preserved, but because it is a vibrant urban centre in the heart of Tallinn. That is why a diverse Council is essential to ensure all this. The new Council will meet already in June."

The new composition of the Council was confirmed based on positions, with the Chairperson of the Council being the Deputy Mayor coordinating the areas of activity of the Tallinn Urban Planning Department, the District Elder of City Centre (Kesklinn) as the Vice-Chairperson, and the Deputy Mayor coordinating the areas of activity of the Tallinn Strategic Management Office’s Enterprise Service and representatives of the city authorities as members of the Council. Representatives of the relevant national authorities and specialised organisations will be invited to participate in the work of the Commission.

The tasks of the Tallinn UNESCO World Heritage Council are to monitor the preparation of the development documents for the Old Town and its implementation; to make proposals to better ensure the protection of the Old Town as a World Heritage Site; to advise the city administration on the development of operational strategies affecting the living, tourism and business environment of the Old Town; to analyse the operating environment of the Old Town and make proposals for its development; and to organise, in cooperation with the authorities and experts, the fulfilment of the requirements arising from the status of World Heritage City in the administration and management of the World Heritage Site.
