Estonian mobility unicorn Bolt launched an eco-friendly 3-wheel electric car in Malta.

Estonian unicorn Bolt has collaborated with Dubai-based startup Buzzz Electric’s Carver to introduce a new electric compact vehicle on the streets of Malta.

The Carver vehicle has three wheels, a range of 100 kilometres, and can comfortably manoeuvre through narrow streets. It has seatbelts, and a tilting mechanism is enclosed and converts to a convertible in the summer.

A new kind of transportation

The vehicle, which can seat two passengers and is only 98cm wide, will be accessible via the Bolt app under a new category called “traffic buster.” Bolt aims to solve Malta’s mounting traffic and environmental issues by offering cheaper and quicker rides that are 100% electric. Another reason, pointed out by Bolt co-founder Martin Villig, is the optimal use of resources. On average, there are 1.2 clients per taxi ride, whilst a typical car is designed for 3-4 passengers.

“With this new category, Bolt will cater to single passengers with cheaper and quicker rides, all whilst being 100% electric. In order to ensure the safety of our riders, these Carver vehicles have been uniquely modified for this specific use in Malta, and all necessary training has been provided to drivers of this new category,” said Ryan Mahoney, Country Manager of Bolt Ridehailing in Malta.

Buzzz Electric’s General Manager, James Formosa, expressed enthusiasm for the Carver, which he claims is as nimble as a scooter, but offers the comfort and safety of a car. “You see an increase in the number of mobility platforms, and Bolt is the one with the highest growth in Europe. For a while now, they have been experimenting with various mobility solutions tailored specifically to the city”,  Anton Rosier, CEO of Carver, noted.

If Bolt’s pilot in Malta goes well, the company will consider expanding it to other cities, ensured Villig.

Bolt has over 100 million users across Europe and Africa and has already pioneered many micromobility innovations. Since its founding in 2013, the company has amassed over 230,000 scooters and e-bikes in over 250 cities worldwide, offering ride hailing, car-sharing, food and grocery deliveries.
