Webinar: Green solutions to improve environmental quality
With continuous urbanization, ensuring environmental quality in cities has become an increasing challenge. Air pollution, noise and heat islands have become everyday problems that we need to face in the cities. However it is known that green spaces and vegetation can provide substantial impact in minimizing these risks.
During our webinar we will share knowledge on how to implement green infrastructure and other nature-based solutions in the most effective way. We will bring international examples as well as provide useful guidelines for practitioners. Also, we will discuss why too many trees are not always good for air quality.
To share his experience and knowledge we have invited John Gallagher, an Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland, whose research has focused on delivering innovative passive solutions to the current challenge of outdoor and indoor air pollution in the built environment.
He adopts the 3M approach (Measurement, Modelling and Mitigation) to develop design solutions for healthier urban spaces. Dr Gallagher is currently a work package lead in the GoGreenRoutes project, a project in partnership with Tallinn City and 38 other partners across Europe, with his work focusing on the implementation of nature-based solutions to improve environmental quality (air, noise, thermal comfort, biodiversity) in six cities across Europe. Dr. Gallagher also leads national research activities in the improving spatial and temporal air quality conditions around urban railway hubs, and previously contributed to the Horizon2020 iSCAPE project which explores solutions to advance the control of air quality in European cities through remediation strategies, policy interventions and behavioral change. He has active collaborations with researchers in Europe, the U.S. and Asia in the field of air pollution mitigation.
Webinar will take place online on Microsoft Teams platform on Monday, June 13 at 15:00-16:00 (Eastern European Time).

Webinar is organized by Tallinn Strategic Management Office as part of Horizon2020 project "GoGreenRoutes" that focuses on the implementation of nature-based solutions in urban spaces. The focus in Tallinn is on the Vormsi green area in Lasnamäe district, where the aim is to recognise the existing natural and cultural values of the pilot area through site-specific green solutions.
