Tallinn Mayor hosted the International Ice Hockey Association

Today, 12 November, the Mayor of Tallinn Mihhail Kõlvart hosted the new President of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF, Luc Tardif, Vice-President Petr Brizat and Vice-President of the European Region Henrik Bach-Nielsen, to discuss the promotion of ice sports in Estonia.

Mayor Kõlvart said that ice hockey in both Estonia and Tallinn has made a great development leap in the last decade, and one of the important prerequisites for this is new Tondiraba Ice Rink, which was completed in 2014. "The number of hockey enthusiasts in the capital has increased by more than 90% in 2013-2021, and there is increase in of both the number of coaches and sports clubs. In addition, Estonian ice hockey has a dignified history, as it celebrates its 90th anniversary this season. All this gives hope that we also have the potential to become a strong hockey country like our close neighbours,“ said Kõlvart.

In addition to the events of the jubilee season, the tripartite meeting with the IIHF and the Estonian Hockey Association also discussed the promotion of ice sports in Estonia and the capital, and increasing the competitiveness of Estonian ice athletes in the world. It was stated that the biggest concern is the lack of ice rinks in Estonia as well as in the capital. There is a great need for new training ice rinks, which would help to expand popularity of ice hockey and develop women's hockey in particular.

The Estonian Hockey Association praised the capital's initiative to organize outdoor training facilities for young hockey players in the past winter, while due to COVID restrictions, the sports halls were open only to top sports.

The delegation of the International Ice Hockey Federation is visiting Tallinn in connection with the Baltic Challenge Cup 2021 on 11-13. November in Tondiraba Ice Rink.

At yesterday's Estonia vs Latvia hockey game, Estonia achieved a historic victory over Latvia with the score of 5-2. Today at 19.00 the Estonian team will host Lithuania in the Tondiraba Ice Rink.
