Tõnu Kaljuste to become Principal Conductor of Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and Artistic Director of Tallinn Philarmonic Society

From the 2019/2020 season, Tõnu Kaljuste will serve as the Artistic Director of the Tallinn Philarmonic Society and, after a pause of 18 years, return as the Principal Conductor of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra.

“I was moved when the musicians of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra invited me to return. But our cooperation has actually never ceased. Only the forms of cooperation have been different in the meantime. In the autumn, after the new hall of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre is completed, we will hold a series of beautiful concerts,” Tõnu Kaljuste said.

Tõnu Kaljuste was the conductor of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra from 1993 to 1995 and from 1996 to 2001, with miscellaneous cooperation projects continuing in subsequent years. Kaljuste was also the founder of the orchestra and has guided the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra to its greatest achievements and the most significant performances.

“Conducted by Kaljuste, the TCO has performed in the Berlin Concert House, Carnegie Hall, the Philarmonie of Paris, to name but a few prominent venues; the orchestra was also one of the performers on Arvo Pärt’s record “Adam’s Lament” for which Tõnu Kaljuste won a Grammy in 2014,” said Margit Tohver-Aints, Managing Director of the Tallinn Philarmonic Society.

Tõnu Kaljuste is an internationally recognised conductor, as well as Professor at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and a prominent intellectual figure in Estonian music whose ideas and initiatives are noted and appreciated by the general public. “It is incredibly fortunate that Tõnu Kaljuste has decided to share his musical experience and wisdom with us,” Margit Tohver-Aints said.
Tõnu Kaljuste will commence his work as the Principal Conductor of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra and the Artistic Director of the Tallinn Philarmonic Society on 1 September 2019. He will have a tenure of five years.

Kaljuste inherits the position from Risto Joost. The previous Artistic Directors of the Tallinn Philarmonic Society and the Principal Conductors of the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra include, in addition of Kaljuste himself, Eri Klas and Juha Kangas.

Founded in 1993, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra is the only full-time professional string orchestra in Estonia. The repertoire of the TCO includes music from Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods, as well as from composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including less-known works and new music premieres. The orchestra is composed of excellent string players who often perform as soloists or in chamber groups.
